Frequently asked questions

Why is L/100 km different from MPG?

L/100 km measures fuel consumed over a distance, while MPG measures distance traveled per unit of fuel, so the relationship is inverse.

Is US MPG the same as UK MPG?

No. US and imperial gallons have different volumes, so their MPG figures are not directly interchangeable.

Can I compare electric cars with MPG?

Electric vehicles are commonly compared using energy-consumption measures such as kWh/100 km rather than liquid-fuel MPG.

Comparing fuel-economy units

Fuel economy can be expressed as distance per unit of fuel, such as miles per gallon or kilometres per litre, while some countries use fuel consumption such as litres per 100 kilometres. These formats describe the same underlying relationship in different ways.

A distance-per-fuel figure and a fuel-per-distance figure are inversely related, so a higher fuel-economy number does not mean the same thing as a higher consumption number. Keep the unit system consistent when comparing vehicles.

Use the converted result for comparisons, then consider driving conditions, traffic, load, weather and manufacturer testing methods when estimating real-world fuel use.
