How VAT is calculated
Value-added tax, or VAT, is commonly applied as a percentage of the taxable price. This calculator can estimate VAT from a net price and VAT rate, or help reverse the calculation when a displayed price already includes VAT. Always check whether the rate entered applies to the goods or services in your jurisdiction.
For a net price, VAT is generally calculated as price multiplied by the VAT rate. The gross price is the net price plus VAT. When VAT is already included in a gross price, the VAT portion is not simply the gross price multiplied by the rate; the included tax is derived from the rate and the gross amount.
Example
At a 20% VAT rate, a $100 net price produces $20 of VAT and a $120 gross price. If $120 is a VAT-inclusive price, the included VAT is $20 and the net amount is $100.
Important note
VAT rules, exemptions, reduced rates and rounding can differ by country and product category. Use this calculator as a general estimate and verify the applicable tax rules for an actual transaction.
